Erik Weihenmayer made history by becoming the first blind person to reach the summit of Mount Everest. But Erik's journey to the top of the world's highest mountain was just the latest in a lifetime of adventures.
Early Struggles with Vision Loss
Erik was diagnosed with a rare form of juvenile macular degeneration at the age of 13 and gradually lost his sight over the next few years. Despite this, Erik never let his blindness stop him from pursuing his dreams. He became a wrestler in high school and later went on to become a teacher and motivational speaker.
Finding a New Purpose Through Adventure
Erik discovered his love for adventure in his late twenties, after a friend introduced him to rock climbing. Despite the many challenges he faced as a blind climber, Erik was determined to push himself to new limits. He went on to summit some of the world's most challenging peaks, including Mount Kilimanjaro and Aconcagua.
The Summit of Mount Everest In 2001
Erik set his sights on the ultimate challenge: Mount Everest. Despite the many dangers and difficulties of climbing at such high altitudes, Erik refused to give up. With the support of a team of experienced climbers, Erik reached the summit of Everest on May 25th, 2001.
